Customer Reviews

Good optics and build quality, but big and heavy. The optics and build quality of this monocular are excellent. My only criticism is that it is quite large and heavy, considerably larger and heavier than I was expecting. Maybe I just didn't red the specs carefully enough before buying. I have another monocular that I was looking to improve on that I take backpacking, but this one is probably too big and heavy to take hiking. I plan to keep it anyway as it is well made. I guess I will have to look for another one that is smaller for more mobile uses.4WowAll I can say is wow. I purchase this product without reading Amazon reviews due to there not being any. I read some reviews at other sites that said this was a good monocular, and knowing the Orion name I went for it. I personally don't like binoculars I can never get to where the image is clear with both eyes. I am very happy with this item. I can zoom all the way out and read the emblem on a refriderator in a guys yard at almost half a mile. Zoomed all the way out it's hard to keep from shaking but I was standing at the door to my office, not resting my arms on something. This is a great little item I'd recomind it to others looking for a great monocular for the money.5Some disappointment, but ok overall.I had hoped that this would be as good as the one I bought before, but this one is somewhat less and although it is lightweight and easy to carry, it is not as clear nor is it as easy to use. It is very near to the other though, and is satisfactory. I would recommend it for those that need a do-all monocular and need a close focus monocular. I like it ok, but I like the the other one better as it is easier to use and somewhat better in the optics department--but that is just my opinion, and I am hardly an expert in optics. Generally, I prefer my Bushnell over and above either of these Orions, but it cost more than both of them together.3A lot of blue fringe at all levels. + 2 Update'sMaybe I got a bad one. In reading all of the rave reviews it must be a fluke. From the lowest of 10x to 25x everything has blue around it (chromic abarration?). It focuses fine and easy, has a tripod mounting hole, has great magnification, and is otherwise very nice and comfortable to hold. It would be otherwise good at the shooting range up to 100 yards. I can't accept all of the blue fringe so I am sending it back. The fixed model 10x with a 42mm lens has no fringing at all but I needed a monocular that can adjust magnification. I cannot recommend this.Update 3-25-14:I received another and it also has a blue fringe around things. I was told by Orion Customer Service (fast reply) that the 'blue fringe is normal and expected with this model but not in the center, just at the edges'. This is the only monocular I have experienced blue fringes with but it also has the largest lenses. I do like the variable and larger lens, but I do not like the blue fringes.Update 4-28-14:I received another and kept it as I really like the variable, but it also has blue fringes, less than the others it seems but is still very obvious. I assume it is a trade-off so I kept it for the variable power and size of lenses. It should do fine for my purpose of travel, but it is likely not great for birding and getting accurate colors. I also recommend the Amazon Basic monopod for it as it has a screw-in spot for a tripod/monopod. I had tried several scopes and found this to be the only with abberation but the best in power. It is very comfortable to hold and carry and comes with a wrist strap and belt case with cleaning cloth. Thanks to Amazon returns with Prime I was able to compare. I am glad to have it now, and I hope this helps someone.1Good alternative to binoculars Well built, compact and easy to adjust. Optical quality is very good. After two pairs of binoculars had their internal prisms knocked out of line, making them useless, I decided to try a monocular. I find this easier to use. Comes with a nice fabric carrying case and lanyard. Much more compact to carry than binoculars. 4Very happy with my purchase. Wife is happy. Perfect for bird watching and may also be used for astronomy.I have 3 telescopes that I use for astronomy. I also have a Celestron Travel Scope 50 and 4 sets of binoculars for daytime use and for astronomy. So I know a little about scopes, binoculars and optics. When my wife became interested in bird watching none of them were to her liking. She does not like binoculars and my spotting scope requires you to change the eyepieces to change magnification and she did not like the 45 degree eyepiece angle. She wanted something small and light that she could carry and use free hand but that could be put on a tripod when she wished. And she wanted a zoom to be able to see birds at a distance. That is when I found the Orion 10-25X42 Zoom Monocular. I know the Orion brand as they make my main telescope, so I ordered with confidence. I was not disappointed. This is like half of a binocular so it has a wider field of view than most spotting scopes which is great for bird watching and for other daytime activities. The optics are bright and clear. The focus is easy to use and the zoom is silky smooth. I had seen some others that looked similar but they lacked a place to mount it on a tripod and that was critical for me.We have had this now for a few days and have had a lot of time to use it. I am very happy with the purchase and, more importantly, my wife really likes it. It now sits on a light camera tripod in our dining room where she can use it to watch the birds on the feeder or across several neighbor's yards. We also take it to parks and the beach for bird watching there. As I end up carrying stuff I really appreciate the very light 12 ounce weight.I find it more difficult to hold steady than my 10X binoculars but that is not the fault of the unit. If you plan to use it freehand you need to find a way to brace your arms. Anything above 10X really needs a tripod. I also ordered a car window tripod so we can watch the birds from the car if it is hot or cold or whatever. You move the window up and down to get the right height and the mount has a ball head.I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to others. I may even try it for a little astronomy. I use 7X35 and 10X50 binoculars for astronomy, in addition to my telescopes. This is really half of a binocular so it should do just fine and, unlike my binoculars, this has a zoom eyepiece.5I have several binoculars but I like this better.I love it. One eye, easy to focus and zoom, neck strap, and tripod screw hole. I bought it for the convenience of zoom and size. I am fine at up to 20 zoom held by hand. If you want to use it on full 25 zoom, it gets a little shaky held by hand, so for birds, animals, etc., at long distance, a small tripod is best. It also works with my phone camera put up to the eye piece, so I might purchase the the actual mounting holder so I can do this. I have several binoculars but I like this better.5GreatWorked great for me, I could see .223 holes at 50 yards with 72 year old eyes. Would recommend to a friend. Nice small package but it could use some lens covers. I was able to use both hand held and with mini tripod.5Happy with this purchase. This is a cool optic. I really didn't know what to expect, having never had a "monocular" before. It took a little getting used to, but now I go looking for things to look at, just to play with it. lol The image quality is great and I can use it with or without my glasses, just bend back the eye cup for use with my glasses. The fact that you have infinite adjustability on the magnification is great, start out at 10 power and just slowly turn it up to 25 power or anything in between, does get a bit "shaky" at the higher mags. All-in-all, a very nice optical device for all around use.4Great zoom monocularThis is one nice little zoom monocular. The images are nice on low power. On high power it shakes but that's to be expected. So far I like it and Orion sells very nice products.5Great buy for a hand held spotter I was astounded by the clarity. It took a bit of time to get used to the 10X minimum and the focus requirements. Great buy! 5Awesome Deal!!! This thing is great! It's clear throughout the 10-25 zoom and that 42mm lens really brings in the light. well made and heavy too. But like all monoculars it does seem to be more difficult than binoculars to hold steady. But i use it for hunting and just end up leaning on a tree which works well for the higher magnifications. 5Great productThis has been a great product i have used this many many times and i have nothing bad to say. It has been great to have..I work on pole lines most of the day and not having to pull a ladder off the truck is nice. Clear and the zoom is great to have.5
