Customer Reviews

Excellent scope. Very good stand. Not so good light set. For the price, this unit is really good.I like all of it. I have bought other optic lenses which make the unit even more awesome. The image is clear, adjustments are easy. I've worked with other brands of stereoscopes at work and this one is pretty good. One complaint I have is that it was missing an adjustment knob. But I contacted the seller and they sent me the part right away. Way to go!I gave it 4 stars because it is a bundle. And with the scope so the light comes. And although the LED ring is bright, and somewhat good, it feels cheap. The controller specially. Not only it feels cheap, it broke after about 10 uses. It took me a while to get in touch with the seller about this (the same day I made this review) so I am waiting to see if it is still under warranty or if they can replace it or something. If not I will try to fix it my self. But again, it seems to be pretty cheap.Update (12/19/17): The vendor never contacted me again... well, I will build a LED controller for my LED ring... 4Great purchase. Tough to imagine a better value for the money. This is one of those products that you kick yourself for not getting it sooner. The price was great. It's a very well thought through design. And it's manufactured incredibly rugged. Arrived 48hrs after ordering and took about 30-minutes to assemble. The image is excellent. The LED light ring gives great illumination and the variable brightness is smooth fading. The base is very heavy so it never feels unsteady or off-balance, even with the arm fully extended. There are reviews online about the steel in the arms being mild instead of hard tool steel. For now, these are fine. I may upgrade that later - but if I do I doubt it will be because it needs it rather because I really love this and want to trick it out completely. 5Incredible scope for the price This scope is a true bargain. The optics are as crisp and as sharp as any name brand professional scope that I have used. The boom stand is not all it could be since the moving parts do not lock down without torquing the compression levers and knobs with all of my strength but it is still quite functional. I am using a full frame Nikon 810camera on the C mount camera tube and it works quite well (the Nikon camera mount is not included and can be purchased separately from AmScope). The camera can not be locked into the mount with a set screw, and can turn if touch but I have not found that to be problematic. One annoying feature of the optics when using the 2x lens to acquire the 45 to 90 x magnification range is that the field is quite curved but this aberration can be removed in Photoshop. Regardless of these minor limitations, I definitely will not be sending this scope to back to Amazon! 5Amazing! Insane value!!!! Love the 4 way LED light (Super super useful feature). I would not buy without that. Optics perfect. Razer sharp and clean. No diffraction of light. Only issue is when you zoom, you have to refocus and also tweak one of the 2 eye diaopters. I think this has to due with CCD/Cmos access port. Small inconvenience considering how this is built. After a few tries I don't think about it. You can move all the controls without looking. Another huge plus is that you can position the scope in any conceivable direction. The base is also soooo heavy!!!!!! Rock stable even pulled out all the way. 5Great hobby scope! I purchased this for my hobbies in geology and archaeology and it has been outstanding - with a couple of caveats. This microscope has no stage, and many of my specimens are too small to see without raising them to the lens, so I had to solve for a workable stage that I could set rocks and other hard sharp objects on. I ended up using a small laboratory jack (Sold on Amazon as well) for the stage allowing me to put a specimen on it and raise it to the approximate required level, and then using the microscope for the final adjustments. This has worked out perfectly.I read about the horizontal rails on a similar model becoming pitted due to being undersized for the bearings rolling against them. With this in mind, I always carefully apply upward force to the heavy end before rolling it and have seen no pitting. No sense taking any chances - I want this microscope to last. The lens are perfect for my hobbies, and the ability to zoom is especially useful. The light source is really useful as well - it is bright and you can adjust the direction of the light by turning off some of the LEDs.The unit is incredibly big and heavy - I didn't realize just how big and heavy until I assembled it and then decided to move it. It was too long to fit in the appointed spot in my lab, but luckily because it will turn every which way, I ended up sitting it up sideways instead of longways and it works fine. You will have no problem with the unit accidentally moving (unless of course the table its on collapses!) as it is very heavy.I purchased this unit with the idea of someday attaching a camera, but have not done so as yet so I can't speak to that function.Movements are all smooth and have a professional feel to them. Overall this has been a wonderful purchase with one small hitch...You must assemble the unit from several parts - and the manual that came with my unit did not apply to the microscope I purchased. Weird. Most of the assembly was straight forward and being a man (I hate to ask for help) I finally figured out the few odd attachments you must make. Overall it was a fun puzzle to solve, but most people would likely prefer to either receive the correct assembly instructions or look them up online. It took about 30 minutes to assemble (and most of that was scratching my head over 1 part). 5Giving it a four since they gave me a bad link to the pdf file and the manual that ... The scope itself is incredible. Giving it a four since they gave me a bad link to the pdf file and the manual that came with it didn't match my scope either. There phone support is excellent. All in all I'm very happy with the scope. Word of advice, it does not come with software or a camera. I would advise not getting the adapter for your camera as it does not come with software and even if your camera is supported it is useless to focus.I landed up returning the adapter (I have Nikon 5100) and bought their camera and it works great. So a lot of swirl I hope others can avoid, but no regrets on the scope... it exceeded my expectations. 4Good but not great Decent but definitely get what you pay for. The focus knob is gritty, the finish is a bit rough on parts, and the light is not so great. Don't misunderstand this - it is quite useable and the optics are clear and easy to focus. Something I didn't find anywhere else: there is a rod to pull to block the left eyepiece and activate the camera port - IT IS NOT A SIMUL-FOCUS SCOPE. I didn't think it was going in and I don't really need it, but it should be better explained. If you need simultaneous focus, spend the (little) extra money and get the 4NTP model and a better light unless you truly need the 90x magnification this one has. 4After resoldering extentions to the switch leads instead of floating plug connections it worked like a charm Loven it. Shipping was on time, one box with smaller items and boxes inside. Setting up was almost flawless but had to cheat because the support arms can go either way. First day I spent over 8 hours looking through it. One problem I did have was the led 144 light power box wasn't working. After wiggling the power connector and button it was the power switch. Opening the module it was clear the solder joint was cold... Ok instead of throwing a fit I took this as my first job with the scope. After resoldering extentions to the switch leads instead of floating plug connections it worked like a charm. Great buy. 5Solidly built, good optics, an assembly manual would've been helpful I just put the scope together (correctly, I hope) and so far it seems like an excellent microscope for the price. It's heavy and solidly built, so using it with a similarly heavy DSLR camera should pose no problems. My only complaint (like others, here) is taht AmScope's instruction manual (and parts list) is pathetic. The company would be doing everyone a favor (their customers and their customer service employees) if they included scope-specific instructions (and parts lists) with their instruments. The booklet that was shipped with this microscope was a generic one-size-fits-all pamphlet that was of little to no use in assembling this particular piece of equipment.Additional comment (edited review): It's odd that AmScope doesn't ship a decent manual with their microscopes (and other products), but the manuals are available on the website or by phone. The website downloads apparently require a specific code that's purportedly sent with the item (I've purchased two microscopes and a camera, and none came with the download code), but the customer service folks are very friendly and seem happy to e-mail the product manuals. My advice would be to get the manual prior to assembling the scopes, particularly the more elaborate scopes (the compound scopes are relatively self-explanatory, and don't have many pieces). Who knows why this company (which produces very nice scopes for extraordinarily reasonable prices) is so tight-fisted with their manuals, but it's a good idea to get them one way or another. 4Great microscope, but hard to pick the right one on Amazon. First off, let me say that this is an amazing microscope for the money. This unit is as good or better than the than Wild Instruments unit that is replaced, at a fraction of the cost.Unfortunately, it is hard to compare the different models available on Amazon. As far as I can tell, they differ in...1) Base and arm style2) Availability of extra camera port3) Included lenses and eyepieces4) Illumination typeYou should goto the AmScope website and walk though the "build your microscope" section to decide which features you want and then come back to Amazon and pick the package that matches. Note that you can also get some of the part a-la-carte to add on after you've gotten the unit picked out.Which base you need depends on how you will use it. I got the double sliding arm base which is supper handy for desktop work because you can easily slide the microscope out of the way when not in use. The one I got also lets you adjust the view angle, which is probably overkill me - I could live with just being able to look straight down.I also opted for the integrated camera mount, but this is not as useful as I had hoped. I imagined that I would be able to just quickly click off a photo of whatever I was looking at, but in practice this does not work because the camera does not see the same view as the eye pieces, the camera needs to be refocused, and you need to slide the metal rod on the left side to engage the camera optics, which disables the left eyepiece. Note that this took me a long time to figure out and does not seem to be mentioned in the manual anywhere. For lenses, the 0.5x works great for SMD board work. It gives you about 8 inches of working space between the end of the microscope and the board and you can still easily see and work on 0402 and MSOP sized parts.Rant on Manual Download:The manual is not included. It must be downloaded from the website. To download it you need a password. To find the password, you have to open up the non-manual insert that comes in the box, which tells you to to use the password printed below. If the space below is blank (like mine), then the password is printed on the outside of the shipping box (which I had already tossed). I finally got back the box, and finally found the password *underneath* another label. Argh. After all that, I download the manual and found it to be almost completely unhelpful. Note to AmScope: You make a great microscope, now make a great manual and make it easy to download form the website without a password. All complaints aside, this is a great microscope and if you spend a little time making sure you pick the right one for your needs, then you will be very happy with it. 5
