Cisco wants more money for VPN Client so they'll let it break after 1-2 years I've been a network engineer and architect for over 15 years, with most of the time configuring and installing Cisco gear.I bought this for my home for two goals - VPN in and better firewall protection than what an ASUS router comes in with.I prefer working on CLI, in the last few years with the push towards GUI, Cisco ASA's have become a lot less intuitive when configured from the CLI. GUI isn't so great either.I've known Cisco to provide hardware and then charge extra for Licenses to enable features in the Enterprise space. So for home use I expected them to ask more money for Firepower etc. I didn't feel the need for firepower so I didn't bother with that.I do care about ability to VPN in - which at the time when I purchased it was provided along with VPN client software for Windows and Mac (version 3.1). Now < 2 years later, after a routine OS upgrade on my MacBook, the VPN client stops working. I contact Cisco and jump through a few hoops just to get a ticket opened. And then I am told that I need to buy a contract/upgrade in order to download version 4.x. This to me is a new low for a company I once admired.I refuse to do that because I've already paid for that functionality when I bought the ASA. I expected a company like Cisco to support the features I paid for until the End of life of the product. I'm not expecting configuration or installation assistance or any new features from them.Simply a basic VPN client that was promised when I bought the Firewall. But their Supports unwillingness to do that leaves me with no choice but to stop supporting/recommending Cisco going forward. If you are a home user or a small business owner then give other competitors a fair shake. 1Trying to take advantage of people that do not know better. Received a 02V which is affected by known bug that can turn it into an expensive paper weight. No reason these affected version should still being sold. Trying to take advantage of people that do not know better. 1Great firewall, and will already for small business budge ... Great firewall, and will already for small business budge provide a professional firewall.Compared to my old router i got instantly about +15MBit/sec more throughput out of my Cable service provided. Also keep in mind, the 5506-x version does not do the L2 (switching) functionality as the previous version did. This has implications in the market segment of small business deployments.Ensure your deployment includes a compatible managed switch that will allow to implement the L2 configurations for your network design. If you are planning to use the AMP (Advanced Malware Protection), URL or IPS features ensure to add a subscription for those services. 5The $$ you'll save may NOT be worth the hassle. The review is not about the ASA but rather on Amazon and the reseller.Ok, I got this product because I wanted to setup a home lab as I support ASAs for some customers. The product is good but getting SmartNet is a hassle, I read various reviews online and I was hesitant but I figure it was for testing purposes I could do without smartnet. When i tried to license it various Smartnet resellers told me the product couldn't be licensed, that it had been registered by another company, etc. Long story short I was able to get smartnet but even then there's an entitlement issue for vpn access. I would NOT get the product from this vendor if I were to use it in production environment, even if I needed another ASA from testing purposed I'd rather go with an authorized Cisco reseller even when if i have to pay a few $$ more, what i saved on price I ended up paying it back (and even more) in time trying to get the whole thing sorted out. 3Cisco Field Notice FN - 64228 - ASA 5506, ASA 5506W, ASA 5506H, ASA 5508, and ASA 5516 Might Fail After 18 Months After several people speaking about how the product was effected even a few months ago, I received a V02 version which most likely would of bricked after a reboot or after 18 months. Cisco recommends that these be returned. From previous reviews it seems that this seller had been aware of the issue and still tried to sell the product. Cisco 5506 otherwise is a great firewall and I'm still looking to get one. 2Hardware warranteed but not the software Have a long and happy history using the ASA series -- no thanks to Cisco business practices. This latest unit, delivered in mid-February 2018, had six-month old software pre-installed. As it turns out the software has a bug which limits its ability to function in my environment. Upon advising Cisco of this I was told that only the hardware was warranted and that to get the software fixed I would have to buy a SmartNet contract. For $120. I have no need for the entire range of Smartnet services -- I'd just like the latest version of the software which from the Release Notes appears to resolve the issue. The problem is minor and not worth returning the device. 3Professional grade so watch out - hard to configure. Amazing router. Needs professional experience to setup. This is NOT a consumer grade router so don't think it is. The wizard does not work to set it up. 5supports better encryption (AES256GCM) for site to site tunnels and remote ... Sure it lost the functionality of a switch, but there is so much more that you can do with the this model than the ASA5505 that it replaced. It is now more closely related to the other models in the line up. Its faster, has firepower, supports better encryption (AES256GCM) for site to site tunnels and remote access using AnyConnect with IPSEC. All in about the same sized package. I use it for my home firewall and at work for training classes. A lot less bulky than our old choice the ASA5515. Great product. 5Warning! Make sure the device you receive is not affected by Cisco Field Notice 64228 My review is really about having received a V02 manufactured 07/14/2016. There is a known, serious problem with this specific manufacturing code/date. The vendor should have been aware of these items in their inventory, and should have returned that inventory to Cisco and not sell it.I must state the vendor did accept a return and gave me a refund after I explained the problem, so they are honest as far as that is concerned. If I was not technically knowledgeable on Cisco products, I would not have known what I received, and would have had issues once it was out of warranty. The ASA5506 is a great firewall (I work with the higher end business products), so my review is not on the firewall itself.Cisco might exchange it for you, but why buy it new here and turn around and go through the replacement process with Cisco?** Note: I was not allowed to post links to the Cisco field notice and exchange process, so you'll have to find the information yourself. If you need further information Google: Cisco Field Notice FN - 64228 - ASA 5506, ASA 5506W, ASA 5506H, ASA 5508, and ASA 5516 Might Fail After 18 Months or Longer Due to Clock Signal Component Failure Replacement Available for Items Under Warranty or Service Contract. In summary, it is OK to buy from this vendor, just make sure you don't get one that is affected. You should really keep this in mind with any vendor you might decide to buy a firewall series included in this notice. 2V02 Will potentially become a brick after 18 months These are being recalled due to a clock issue. The one I received is a V02, which is affected. Basically after 18 months, if the firewall is rebooted for any reason, it may not come back. If you've ordered this, look around on Cisco's website to try to get a replacement if it's still under warranty. 1
