Inexpensive Tool to Better your Photographs I love taking panoramic pictures. A level shot means a perfectly aligned panorama. My tripod didn't have a bubble level, nor did my tripod head (I have a Velbon El Carmagne 530). I purchased an "Opteka Hot Shoe Three Axis Triple Bubble Spirit Level" to solve the problem of leveling my camera on the head. However, I quickly ran into problems with taking a panorama because I'd have to level my camera head every time I panned to the right.I found this tool and bought two of them. This tool can simply be attached onto the tripod's center column; then, you can adjust the legs to make the tripod inherently level, from the bottom up.It is a very handy item to have, and it takes up very little room. Thankfully, I was able to solve a problem inexpensively, rather than having to return my tripod for another more expensive tripod with a bubble level attached. 5Good idea, but too bulky This has a very easy mounting system when attaching to the tripod's center post. As I don't raise the center post, in an attempt to provide a more stable platform, I mounted it under the leg spider. It fit, but got in the way when collapsing the legs together readying for transport. The mount was accurate when tightly clamped to the post, but it didn't look like the 'strap' would be up to the task of keeping it that tight for too long - meaning that with a comfortable fit the bubble would be influenced slightly depending on any pressure placed at the top or bottom of the plastic housing. Twisted wire or a thin hose clamp would fix that issue, but the bulkiness would still be there. Still don't have a good solution, as I also tried the large circular disk type, but that really got in the way. Nothing like a built-in level setup for getting the tripod ready for several pan shots to be stitched together. 2Spirit Level - Get 'em while you can! I had looked high and low for a way to add a level to an entry level Bogen tripod. There are many options if you want to buy a level for attaching to the hotshoe of a camera, but I wanted one to attach to the tripod so that I could level the tripod for video work. This solution is great! It just attaches to a center post via a large rubber strap. You can even leave it attached if you don't mind not lowering the center post all the way.You don't have to have a Bogen tripod to use this. It should fit any tripod. Even if your center post is too small for the rubber strap to grip, you could easily come up with a make-shift way of holding it.But I have to say, get them while you can. Some vendors no longer have them and I couldn't find them on the Mandrotto web site. Apparently they are no longer produced. I bought two! 5Great as-is, or customized At the price, I was skeptical. And it is supposedly too big for what I wanted. But I ordered anyway to see if I could make it fix my problem. My problem was this: my tripod has no level on the legs. Leveling the head is useless if the legs aren't level, especially for panoramas. So I contacted Manfrotto on their website and found out this was only supposed to work on 1" to 3" poles. My tripod center pole was under an inch. But, being desperate, I ordered one.The item is "L" shaped, with a stretchy rubber strap that wraps around the pole and snaps into the other side. On a pole large enough, this is absolutely perfect. But my tripod center pole was too small. So I removed the rubber strap, and cut a piece of UHMW (plastic) to go across the back, then drilled holes to match. Add a pair of bolts with wing nuts, and it is now a perfect fit. Here's the best part though: this thing, for the price, looks to be amazingly accurate. I leveled the tripod, then loosened the level and rotated it north, south, east, west, and the level indicated the legs to be dead on level. So, creativity wins out again. But the product was the real star - if it wasn't accurate to start with, it wouldn't have been with the effort. 5Not just for photo stands I bought two of these for a completely different purpose - to check the level of my amateur radio antenna mast. For portable operations, I use military surplus aluminum poles originally intended to hold up camouflage nets. The poles and 4 feet long and can be connected end-to-end. These are great for getting the radio antenna up 30-40 feet or more on the top of multiple mast sections (with proper guy ropes). At those heights, making sure that the poles are as vertical as possible is important. These levels strap right on to the aluminum pole and I can verify that the poles on the bottom are plumb, at least up to the first set of guy ropes. With the bottom sections as a reference, it makes it much easier to eyeball up the rest of the mast. 5Well Made, and does it's job well. Attaches to the Mefoto Roadtrip quickly. Attaches to my MeFoto Roadtrip Tripod securely. I have used it once already to take a panorama on a mountain, and it did its job very well.Easy to take on and off and build quality for such a cheap product is spot on. 5Excellent quality and attaches fast. Larger than I thought it would be. Very well made and built to last. It's 3.5 inches long and 1.9" wide. Has a thick (.26") rubber strap with .45" balls that grip perfectly. Works great as long as there's a vertical tube or pole to mount it to. The smallest diameter vertical tube that this would fit is .982". Any smaller than that, the rubber strap will not be able to grip the tube. But I'm sure you could tape it on or rubber band it on too. 5Using as a tripod level Put on the center column of my tripod. Works great for a quick level. Fits even with the tripod collapsed so can leave it on unless I want to fully extend the center column.5/10/13- was at my daughter's recital to record video. Getting up a tripod level on a slanted floor among slanted seats is not something I have managed well in the past. This was PERFECT. I have a ball head on my tripod as I primarily do photos. Use the center column to pan, so being able to level the tripod, then use a hot shoe level to level the camera made for much better video. 5Pretty good idea but... This is a great solution to putting a level on a tripod that does not have one. I ordered this and found that for my tripod, it cannot be left installed because it's too big to clear the legs when the tripod is folded up. That's a little frustrating because it's a lot bigger than it really needs to be and would work if the attachment approach was a little more well thought out.Notwithstanding the basic engineering, it does work, is easy to use, and appears sturdy enough to last a good while. If you don't mind putting it on and removing it when you deploy your tripod, you will probably give this a 5-star rating when you review it! 3Great bubble level This Bubble level works fantastic. One complaint is the rubber strap over time cracks and breaks making the unit worthless. I tried looking to buy replacement straps without any luck. At the price I just purchase another. If it breaks again, I'll make up my own strap since the unit works well for its purpose. 4
