Things Aren't Necessarily As They Appear... This audio system has beautiful sound and they look nice. But from my background in electronics I can figure out that this "flutter" sound and low level static that I'm now getting --- though down in level (barely audable right now) --- will get worse because it's abviously eminating from a leaky capacitor in the power supply. So, being that I bought these less than a year ago (Nov 2018), I decide to get out the warranty. And in the very first paragraph the warranty states: "This warranty EXPLICITLY EXCLUDES POWER SUPPLIES and included cables which MAY BECOME DEFECTIVE AS A RESULT OF NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR."So obviously they don't have any confidence in the power supply they put into their equipment. And now I don't either. This stuff is real junk. 1Set your expectations low Sound is horrible. Before I gripe too much I'd want to point out that I am no audiophile. I play more video games, music, and movies than any sort of sound creation. I would also point out that I am typing this with less than an hour of play time on them. Some speakers need to be broken in before a fair review can really be made. If I find that to be the case I hope to remember to come back and update this. The closest thing I have here to compare them to are a set of Mackie CR4s (50 bucks more than the AV42s) and the CR4s are overwhelmingly better. Considering how you can't turn the AV42s up over half way* without them distorting, they should probably invest less in the powering element and focus more on the quality of the cones. There isn't anything technically wrong with them but with this sound they are poor value at best. As such I won't return them, but my 5 year old might be getting some hand-me-down speakers for their R-Pi soon.* Half way to mean, Windows 10 running a Sound Blaster Z with music from Google Music. Browser volume all the way up, Windows volume at 50%, playing a song like Shameless (Groove Armada) with a sort of constant base sound... then turning up the knob on the AV42s they start distorting about half way up to the point where 2Lighter and cooler running than the heavier older AV40 speakers. I also have the older AV40 speakers. I have experienced no problems with either those, or with these AV42 speakers. Very good accurate clear sound for near field and also loud enough to fill a room. The heavier, older, AV40 are generally better, I like the protected speaker cones, safe behind a grille. But one thing better about the AV42s is that they don't get hot to the touch like the AV40s. 4Great monitors but interference is an issue. These monitors sound awesome. They have pretty impressive low end for such a small speaker. They sound great for all genres of music and coupled with a sub, it is a great experience for a great value. The one con I have about these though is interference. These monitors pick up A LOT of interference at times. The headphone input has become unbearable due to the constant static I'm dealing with. I have these right next to my monitor and PC which might play a factor, but I truly believe the shielding in these is inadequate in general. The sound is a 4/5 without a doubt but because of the interference issues I'm giving these a 3/5. 3Love M-Audio DJ equipment and MIDI controllers, but looks elsewhere when purchasing monitors. I bought these monitors on a whim... Regrettably. I should have went with KRK's. After two months of owning these, and using them for mastering, they have started to emit a nice static sound along with popping. Keep in mind, I watched my levels, no clipping whatsoever. 3Clarity and Imaging with a Slight Hum I've never owned the ABV40's so I can't really compare the two. I know there are a number of negative reviews but despite it light weight, I rather like my AV42's. The have great clarity and imaging for their size. I find myself listening o music longer as I am hearing details that I never noticed before.A number of reviews mentioned that there was no speaker cable included. However, M-Audio corrected that problem, as I received mine with three cables that I didn't need but was happy to receive. A speaker cable, rca adaptor to 3.5 mm and a straight 3.5mm cable. The only complaint I have is that there is definitely a low hum that bleeds through when the speakers are idle. However, when that happens I just turn the speaker off. Also, the switch is located in the back of the speaker, kinda annoying. 4Amazing sound, minimal desktop footprint Really happy with these speakers. I got a recommendation from a few friends who are house DJs, and these don't disappoint. Currently using them in my office setup just hooked in directly to my Macbook, and the sound quality is phenomenal.---7/30/2017 Update: I've had these speakers for over a year now, and I'm a huge fan. Highly recommend. Here's the skinny:I've gotten into DJ'ing the last few years (at this point mostly just recording sets on my Traktor S2 and sharing on Soundcloud), so I wanted to find a good set of speakers that I could take with me if I wanted to go DJ a house party. But, my main use for these is in my home office (I work remotely), and as desktop computer speakers, they really shine too. I tend to play a lot of electronic (EDM, deep house, ambient), rap and hip hop, and modern pop/electronic. When I'm not wearing my noise-canceling headphones, I'm blasting the music on these speakers. The sound is REALLY good. I'm speaking as a person with audio production experience, and also experience wiring and installing car stereo systems (the kind with 10s and 12s in the back...and 600W amps and 1GW capacitors). These speakers aren't going to get a whole house bumping exactly, but they will get a whole room or floor bumping.Lows are pretty solid for a system without a subwoofer, mids are great, and the highs are crystal clear.Best part is that they have their own analog volume control on the speakers, so you can adjust both via the digital input (on your computer), and on the speaker itself. 5The Best and Best Priced two-speaker system you can buy! Fantastic quality, and great features for low power consumption and ensuring longevity of the product. I purchased these and got an external sound card for my iMac, and LOVE the results. If you're a professional editor, or just love watching movies and playing video games, these speakers are probably the best and most affordable setup you can get. Personally, I prefer a two-speaker setup as opposed to a 5.1 or larger system because it makes it much easier to move and you save space. These things have a great bass frequency, and make listening through your iTunes library like new again. 5M-AUDIO not what it once was. I received this item dead on arrival. Then it worked for about two minutes, then died and would not revive. They have a manufacture date of Feb 2015 on the box so they've clearly been slow moving, or I got something from the back of a warehouse somewhere.. Weird. Annoying. I thought these would make a good replacement upgrade for the M-Audio AV-30 which I currently own and - they do not. There are many reviews which already say - these are inferior to the older M-Audio products they are meant to replace. M-Audio is diluting their brand with this cheap stuff. 1A Huge Step Down from M-Audio AV40s The M-Audio AV42 studio speakers replace the well-regarded M-Audio AV40s which are positively reviewed across the internet. I've owned and loved a pair of AV40s myself for over three years. Needless to say, I was curious to see how the AV40s replacement stacks up against my current pair of speakers. The first thing I noticed upon unboxing the AV42s is their weight. The shipping weight for AV40s is 16lbs. The shipping weight for AV42s is 7.5lbs. That's right--the AV42s are approximately HALF the weight of the weight of the AV40s. If you know anything about speaker, you know that *in general* weight is indicative of higher-quality materials, and specifically, better-built speaker boxes. The AV42s are slightly smaller than the AV40s (see photos).Aesthetically the AV42s are inferior, feel cheaper, don't have the nice matte finish of the AV40s, and are obviously much cheaper in design than the AV40s. They look like knockoffs of the AV40s to be honest. That said, I was willing to give them a shot, and since all the hookups (including the power cable) are identical, was quickly able to swap back and forth between my old reliable AV40s to the AV42s and compare the sound quality side-by-side. That said, writing reviews of how speakers sound is inherently subjective, so YMMV.I found the AV42s to have MUCH lower sound quality than my AV42s. They're a bit pitchy in the high notes, and far too warm or bright. They don't have the depth of sound that the AV40s generate, and perform like inferior, cheaper products. That's because they are--it's clear M-Audio cut corners with these AV42s and release speakers that don't have nearly the same build or sound quality.Which is a huge shame, because the AV40s are stellar, inexpensive desktop speakers that I truly love. I had hopes these AV42s might be *better* than my AV40s, but sadly, they're much, much worse.Another issue with the speakers: they ship with a very short 3.5mm to LR audio cable. If your PC is more than 3 feet from where you want to position the left, powered speaker, you'll need to buy a new, longer cable. Second, the right unpowered speaker requires speaker cable to connect, but M-Audio doesn't provide any speaker cable in the box. Which means you cannot use these speakers without either having speaker cable on hand, OR running to the store to buy some. Is speaker cable really so expensive that M-Audio can't provide a nice, 10-foot length? No. So why not include some? All that said, are the M42s worth purchasing? Not in my opinion. You're much better off getting a pair of AV40s (if you can find them) even for more money. You'll like them far better than these AV42s.Final word: It's always extremely disappointing when a brand you've come to trust replaces one of their product with an inferior substitute. I would have kept buying M-Audio products indefinitely based on my experience with my AV40s. I'm glad I received these AV42s through Vine. If I hadn't, I'd be shipping them back for a refund. 2
