good for all your baby stones i picked up this item to help flatten a badly dished combo stone. it did work, however, this was not the best product for the job. it is so very small and it was broken in half so that made it even smaller. i can't recommend this product for stone flattening in general, but it will do a good job of flattening a particular corner that is high. if you have a very small stone it should be just fine. for standard flattening of normal sized stones i'd say go with a different product.i'd also like to add that after attempting to flatten 1 stone, the half i used had worn down about 50% so it is not a long term stone flattener by any means. 3Worked great to plane my cheap whetstones, satisfying to use Worked great to plane my cheap whetstones. There was a little bit of a curve to it but I don t notice it when sharpening the knives. It does the job as advertised and would purchase again if I need it.Btw it was very satisfying to use this! 5If you maintain your stones frequently this is a great little flattener If you maintain your stones frequently this is a great little flattener. I see no need in spending massive amounts of money on diamond lapping plates, that will often leave deep scratches in your already expensive stone. I prefer this grit because it s right in between 140-400 so it s a little more versatile in that regard, it leaves a nice surface and will champher the sides of your stone with ease (use the back of the stone). It takes a short soak and you re ready to flatten or correct the surface of your whetstone. For 20 bucks this is an awesome addition to your sharpening setup, for beginners and experts alike. 5Flatness -- get two stones This stone did not come flat. I guess you have to buy two of them and face them on each other.EDIT: I am ordering a second of these stones. I am sure that for the price of a second stone this will be a FIVE STAR product. The finish it leaves on a 6k grit waterstone is very nice. Also, if you happen to like a crowned stone, the slight warp in this stone will give you a nice shallow crown. 3Good Stone, but might be luck of the draw Unlike some other reviews for this product, mine arrived in perfect condition, not broken at all. I used it to flatten a 1000/6000 stone, and it worked beautifully. I didn't develop any sunken portions of the stone as has been reported in other reviews. This leads me to believe it was technique on the part of others (not trying to be critical of them here however). One thing to know is that I'm pretty new to stone sharpening, so if you've been sharpening knives for longer than a year or two, take this review with a grain of salt.Another concern was the longevity of the stone, but after repairing my pretty badly worn out whetstone, It had barely put a dent in this flatting stone. I think it should remain good for me for a couple of years at the least. It does seem like the quality the stone arrives in can vary between purchases, so that might be up to fate. Mine arrived just fine.Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. 5Waste of money It doesn't come flat. It has a substantial concave out of the box and therefore needs another flattening stone to flatten it. 1Not flat. Was this flattener supposed to come flat? Because it didn't come flat. Made a nice gravy boat out of my 800 grit stone though, so that's something. 1Works as intended I bought this item because the the wet stone I previously bought had many irregularities to the surface and I suspect most cheap wet stones will have the problem. I chamfered the edges and smoothed the surface.I also tried to do the same on the rough side of the stone. While it did smooth the surface, I noticed the rough side also did it s own damage this leveler. Now there is a notch through the middle. It works fine still but I do wish the material was tough enough to handle both sides of my wet stone better 4My stones are as good as new now! You can't just go grinding away on everything and expect your equipment not to get a little warped. This little thing does a real number on your stones. It's not gentle but it gets the job done. In fact it can be a little rough on your fingertips, so you might want to wear some gloves while you work it. And don't forget to moisturize after: all that slurry can do a number on your hands. My stones are all now as good as new, and as a result I can keep my tools in tip top shape. 5Works great. Performs as expected. As you flatten your sharpening stones, the flattening stone will become clogged with grit removed from the sharpening stone being flattened. Simply washing the flattening stone under running water easily removes the buildup. It is very important to keep your sharpening stones flat for them to perform best! 5
