Customer Reviews

Would not recommend this router! I purchased this Netgear Router 12/16. Recently my Samsung Smart TV will not pick up the WiFi signal. My laptop and iPad still receive the WiFi signal. I cannot watch Netflix which I have been doing since I originally purchased this router. It is past the 90 free support period and they want a fee in order to troubleshoot the problem. I refuse to pay them for something that I feel that they should help me with for free. I will purchase another router from another company and never buy a Netgear product again! I have an Arris modem and a very nice employee spoke to me for a lengthy period of time and finally said that he felt that it was my WiFi router that was the problem and I wasn't charged for their help! 2Great for Smaller Apartments The router actually exceeded my expectations. Our new apartment has pretty fast internet (80-120 mbps download), but instead of opting for a more expensive router to take full advantage of that we decided to try this more affordable option first, and it has been satisfying. In our one bedroom apartment it doesn't give us any hiccups in HD streaming from one end of the apartment to the other. It's a pretty modest size so it's only going across about 30 ft. and through one wall, but it works perfectly for us. Additionally, the US port allowed us to make our $35 printer wirelessly accessible from any device on the network. If you want to stream 4k or have a bigger place, you'll probably start seeing the bottleneck, but for regular gaming and video streaming in a 800 sq. ft. apartment, this is probably all you need. 4Requires regular rebooting We've only had this a few days, but I've already had to reboot it twice, as it's locked-up (doesn't respond to DHCP requests). It has the latest firmware (V1.1.0.34_1.0.1). Very disappointing.Edit: After repeated attempts, Netgear have failed to even pretend to have a solution for this issue. I am therefore returning the router, and will attempt to find something better - I suspect that, in addition to having had my time wasted, I'll have to pay more. 1PERFORMING AS PROMISED This router has provided consistent signal throughout my house since I started using it. I don't seem to have any weak spots anywhere and all our electronics work as they should. That's really about all I can ask for and this router is performing as promised. A recommendation I read before switching to Xfinity said this router was a good one to pair with the the modem I went with and so far they are right. No issues. 5New item not actually new. This company had both new and refurbished options I purchased a new model, when it arrived I tried to hook it up to my modem and was unable to establish a connection because the default user name and password which is standard for all NETGEAR routers did not work. I called NETGEAR direct and they advised the SN was originally purchased 3 (almost 4) years ago and the router was used and the SN had previously been registered to another user. I reset the device to factory settings and it then worked. They clearly put it in new packaging and tried to pass it off as a brand new router, except they forgot to re-set back to factory settings. Will be returning and getting a new router else-wear. 1Only lasted for a year and a half Updated Review 8/7/18The router is no longer connecting to the internet, Directly connected laptop to modem with no issues, rebooted. Broke lease rebooted again, factory reset still no connection ended up connecting my older n router and now able to connect this router is only covered by a 1 year limited warranty so I'm not paying for support, I would recommend a different router for stability. Like other reviewers I've had to reboot the router more often for it to work. This was a great upgrade compared to our netgear wireless n router we now have a dual band network, guest network and we have a more reliable connection in our bedroom now thanks to this router. I was lucky enough to get this on sale but after having this for over a month i wouldn't mind paying full price. 3The Best Wi-Fi Router I have ever bought! I recently just switched from DSL to Cable Internet and I wanted to save money on a monthly charge for using the cable companies router so I decided to buy a router from amazon. I first bought a TP Link. The signal had trouble transmitting through walls and upstairs. I ran various speed tests at different points in the house and it never even broke 30mbs when I was standing right next to it. After I returned it I discovered this amazing router and after installation I ran a speed test in my bedroom two rooms away from the router and I was getting 72mbs down and 7mbs up on what my cable company is supposed to be 60mbs down and 5mbs up. Hands down this router a must for my household. 5Wireless isolation problem, not recommended This router is otherwise decent for home use, except for the "wireless isolation" problem: all devices connected with the 2.4G bandwidth network won't be able to see/access any devices connected by wire (ie, linked to one of the 4 ports with a cable). If you backup the router settings, you can see that for the 2.4G bandwidth wireless the option "Wireless Isolation"=1 that is responsible for this. There is nowhere in the Genie (GUI) for you to change it, and if you modify the backup.cfg and try to restore config with it, the router will refuse by a message "Please select the correct configuration file" or something like it. So I will not recommend to buy it until they fix the problem. I'm asking for a refund. 2It worked fine for the first 3-4 months out of the box It worked fine for the first 3-4 months out of the box. I then tried to enable some QoS settings on it, and after a week or two my wired connection became so unstable I had to turn it off. I then upgraded to the 1.1.0.42 firmware since I saw there was an update in the router's admin panel, and the router has been garbage ever since. I just reset to the 1.1.0.34 firmware, and the connection is still dying. Don't get this router. 2Poor performer, died after firmware upgrade After less than a year of poor performance (wireless devices across the spectrum either not getting fed correct DNS IPs or dropping out altogether), I allowed the router to proceed with a recommended firmware upgrade to version ending in 42. The router never came back, neither after powercycling nor after factory reset. Per indicator LEDs, neither WiFi nor WAN came to life. While it was still within warranty, the 90 day tech support had run out so they would charge me $50 for talking me through troubleshooting steps. A replacement device would ship within 7-10 days. While I'm at it I also want to express my disappointment with the parental control features which are so widely praised for the Netgear routers. I found them to be of limited use as they offer few levels of customization for specific devices on the network. On top of that, they were buggy to begin with. For example, my own cell phone ended up on full restrictions for a few months, denying me access to anything .org and the NY Times. I could not reset it with the almighty Netgear Genie. it took a trouble ticket to reset my account at the server (none of these protections actually reside in the router it turns out) to fix it.This is not the first Netgear product to fail me, and after this experience I am not giving this company another chance. 1
