Good Drive... Noisy I ordered a a 4TB drive but received a 2TB drive - so there's that. Now on the drive itself - it works really well; is fast, well built (it does have some awkward gaps), and the cables are pretty solid (really ugly though). It is really noisy, so if that bothers you don't get it. The noise might have something to do with the gaps in the case, so do take that into account... 3New Drive keeps failing even after reformat. I just purchased this drive to replace an older drive (purchased 2013) - a redundant backup for my audio, video, and photography files - that finally failed. I looked at a few different drives, but decided to go with the OWC drive because I have had good luck with their portable FireWire drives. I thought I'd made a good choice.Boy was I wrong - the disk failed twice during data transfer. Each time, when I tried to mount it again using disk utility, but the drive wouldn't mount and it threw an error that it needed to be repaired. The repair failed both times. Unable to mount it, I erased it and started from scratch... TWICE. At least with my old failed drive, though I can no longer write to it, I can mount it and copy the data. Not this one.The drive must be defective, which is a major disappointment. I trusted the OWC name.I'm sending it back and going with a different manufacturer's drive. I can't take a risk with my data.A tip for anyone who has important data to safeguard - it pays to have redundant backups. Something I learned years ago. 1Excellent external drive. This is my second 2 Tb external drive from OWC. They make solid products with the ports that I need. Everything works right out of the box. I am using this latest external drive as a Time Machine backup drive for my iMac via firewire 800. 5Fantastic enclosure. Solid, sleek, and powerful. When I came across this enclosure, I was looking for a Mac-friendly (FireWire 800) enclosure that supported larger 3-4 TB hard drives. There aren't many out there from established brands such as OWC, but FireWire 800 has always been a difficult to find connection anywhere aside from very Mac-specific products. Glad I found this one, though; it was effortless to set up, looks great next to my MacBook Pro, and all 4 TB were ready for use immediately after plugging in. Some folks may need to reformat their hard drives based on the previous state/use of the drive. I did not.For those of you wondering (as I did before purchasing), I am using Mac OS 10.9.0 on a late 2011 15-inch MacBook Pro (2.5 GHz QC i7), running everything through FireWire 800. Let it be known that this drive also daisy-chains other FireWire drives quite nicely trough the second FireWire 800 port. Finally, while I won't likely use the included USB 3.0 or eSATA ports any time soon, they're good future-proofing in case I eventually upgrade my Mac. Also, the blue LED on the front is incredibly bright, and acts like more of a nightlight than an "on" indicator at night. Just FYI. Not a real issue, but it's quite noticeable in a dark room. 5sturdy, well built been buying OWC mercury elite pro housing for over a decade to match our silver tower MacPro. sturdy, well built. only thing is that it transfers the vibration of the HDD spinning through the bracket stand. so many times we have to put a folded wash cloth under it to dampen the vibration from buzzing (wood shelf, etc). if sitting directly on something more solid (like, the tower aluminum mac pro) it's ok. 5Best external drive case This is one of the best external drive cases I have used. It has better construction, simplified electronics, ample port choices, and does indeed self cool without fan. I found one of more of these critical elements missing in just about every other make. If I needed more than one, I certainly would buy more! 5Excellent backup solution for older macbook pros with firewire 800 Excellent product - clear instructions for setup, which is pretty easy to begin with.I used it for a 4TB drive on older macbook pro with firewire 800. Vastly accelerated Time Machine backups over previous FW 400 Lacie drive. While a bit pricey, it comes with a full complement of cables and has a 3.0 amp power supply to handle the big drives. The aluminium design is excellent for dissipating heat from the high-capacity 7200 rpm drives, which can run pretty hot.It is also pretty much the only enclosure in town that handles big drives for owners of older macbook pros with fireware 800 interfaces. The only other option I found is from Sans Digital, who offers the same features for a slightly higher price. I've been buying parts from OWC for decades now, and I'm glad to see they're still supporting customers with older hardware.Note that most older enclosures will not support drives larger than 2TB. OWC sells this enclosure with a 10TB option, so I assume the bare enclosure will support those bad boys as well. 5This enclosure is nothing short of beautiful with its aluminum/brushed design that fits perfect with my ... This enclosure is nothing short of beautiful with its aluminum/brushed design that fits perfect with my 2017 iMac 5K. I bought it as an enclosure only and added a Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200rpm drive, which was no problem whatsoever. I've used it primarily as a media storage for video editing and the enclosure seems to be handling the heat of the Seagate drive very well. I think this is a great option for those who want the higher speeds of USB 3.0 without having to shell out a bunch of money for Thunderbolt connections. 5My goodness this is a good one I have been through a lot of external drives since my first in 1998.. now keep mind I never bought thee most expensive ones but not the cheapest ethers, now on to this baby she is nice! Very solidly build, she s got some wight behind her. Fast! Some here have said she s loud but not so much. My Mac mini is louder then the drive, if that tells you something. Oh the blue power indicating light is bright so I put a piece of time on it otherwise it s like a neon blue nightl. I just ordered a second one. I am certain that I will never find one this good in this $price range again 5Be careful which drive you buy for this enclosure A word of caution when buying a hard drive for use with this enclosure. I had purchased an HGST 4TB drive, which has a SATA III (6 Gb/sec) interface. After installing this drive, I couldn't get the enclosure to be discovered through USB3 on Windows 10, or through Firewire800 on OSX. The drive spun up, but it wouldn't link up. I swapped the drive out for a WD 2.5TB drive, which has an older SATA 1 ( 3 Gb/sec) interface. The WD drive worked fine. So, beware of trying to use a drive with a SATA III (6 Gb/sec) interface in this enclosure... may not work. After trying the HGST SATA III drive in this OWC enclosure, I tried this same drive in an Orico 3588US3 USB3 enclosure. It worked fine in the Orico enclosure. 3
