This professional manual focus prime lens provides sharp edge to edge coverage of a wide angle 35mm on Full Frame Canon DSLR's while performing as a highly desirable "normal lens" of 56mm on a Canon APS-C sensor cameras. Incorporating an aperture control motor and CPU chip, operation in all exposure modes including Auto/P/ AV/TV/M is possible and the aperture can be controlled from the camera body. Bokeh (the quality of the background defocus) is excellent at F1.4 and aided by its 8 bladed aperture design, remains super smooth throughout its aperture range. The optical design of 12 elements arranged in 10 groups includes 2 high refractive (HR) elements, a glass aspherical (ASP) element to minimize color aberration, and the Ultra Multi Coating (UMC) of all lens surfaces provides high contrast and accurate color reproduction. To preserve high image quality and resolution at close focusing distances a floating element design is also employed. Furthermore, its internal focusing feature provides a non-rotating front filter ring that facilitates the positioning of polarizing and graduated filters plus lens length does not change during focusing. The filter diameter is 77mm and the lens comes equipped with front and rear lens caps, bayonet petal-type lens hood (reversible for storage) and a soft lens pouch.
