Customer Reviews

One week of life, poor construction. The idea is great -- we need more USB ports, and using a C port is a very practical, even necessary approach. This is not cheap, but I thought it would be worth it. It was.. for a week. Now USB connectors that work perfectly with other slots and hubs don't work with this one (some do). There isn't a good, solid mechanical connection. I definitely do not recommend 1Could have been betterThere is a reason why the price of this is so low.First the good:1) Easily connects up to Thunderbolt2) Attached devices are recognized almost immediately.3) Able to hook up external drives that either required power or no power with no issues4) Works for charging devices like headphones when laptop is offNow the bad1) Supposed to be 10 GB/s. Have such a device, and when connected directly through Thunderbolt, I get close to the speed advertised of the PCI NVMe 3x4 SSD. However, same item connected to this, which is supposed to be 10 Gb/s, I am only getting around 5 GB/s. I have two of these and sadly, both behave the same2) Lately, I have been using it to charge my iPhone. When one cable seemed to start acting like it went bad, I threw it out. I put in a good cable later that day, and it started behaving the same. Hook cable up to direct laptop port and the cable works fine.Other thoughts:I would have returned both of these if I had known that it would not get up to the advertised speed. I bought these to future proof my system, but when the future arrived, it did not look good. 3Very disappointedReceived today and immediately plugged into the USB-C port on my new 2017 HP Spectre x360 Convertible. The power light lit on the StarTech but the computer would not acknowledge the connection and therefore none of the USB-A or USB-C ports would work. Tried numerous times with plugging/unplugging and rebooting of the computer. Could not get it to work. It's also made of very cheap, thin plastic, more like a child's toy than a piece of quality electronic accessory. I've bought numerous StarTech items in the past and have always had good luck with them so naturally thought that this one would be good also. I was very disappointed. 1Product is not reliableI was looking forward to a USB-C hub with a USB-C import port. Unfortunately, this hub does not recognize many devices that are attached to it through USB-C. On several instances when an adapter with microSDXC or SDXC memory card in it was attached my 2015 12" MacBook would show the drive, but the folders would show as empty and the data on he memory cards could not be accessed. Also, if there were flash drives attached to the USB 3.0 ports the attached drives would disconnect if a USB-C device was inserted into or removed from the USB-C port. Some memory cards, flash drives and external hard drives worked properly, others did not, it was hit or miss. Sometimes just moving the hub ever so gently would cause devices to disconnect from the drive (they did not detach physically, they ceased to show up as connected). This is another in a long list of disappointments with USB-C devices. It appears there are numerous problems with the controller chips for USB-C devices. I have only had consistent positive results with the Apple hub, which is expensive. Until reliable USB-C devices are available buyers should be extremely careful about buying USB-C peripherals. I thought a company like StarTech would not release a flawed product, but the hub I have is definitely flawed and is being returned. 2False AdvertisingIt was stated that it is a USB 3.1 Gen 2 and explicitly stating here on Amazon and on their website spec sheet that is capable of 10gbps which is 3.1 gen 2 speed. But upon investigating and doing some test, I could not pass the 5gbps. As one of the other reviewers here, he had the same results. I have rummaged through device manager and guess what, it was a 3.0 hub.If it was advertised truthfully, stating that it was 3.0, I would give it a 5 out 5 on overall rating. A little bit expensive but all the materials looks high quality. And if they were to actually have it run 3.1 gen 2 speed and that is just icing on the cake.Unfortunately that is not the case.Severely dissatisfied. My other rig which has 3.1 gen 2 USB expansion powers my 3 Oculus sensors flawlessly.Current setupIntel i9 9900KASRock Phantom Z390 ITXCorsair CMW32GX4M2C3200C16W Vengeance RGB PRO 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3200Nvidia RTX 2080ti Founders EditionCorsair RMX 750 WattsCorsair H115i Pro RGB 2Works with Oculus Rift on Alienware 17 R5.I bought this to connect the Oculus rift to an Alienware 17 r5 laptop. The Rift needs 4 high speed USB 3.0 ports for room scale and this connected to the USB 3.1 gen 2 thunderbolt port on the back to serve the purpose. Works flawlessly after some tweaks to Windows 10. I had to tell windows to not sleep or go into low power states on the USB ports in the power settings and the device manager. After these adjustments the sensors we're recognized by the Oculus software as 3.0 and passed the setup. Prior to changing the Windows 10 settings the Oculus Rift setup failed, one to two sensors showed as USB 2.0 and sometimes all three had issues. 5Fast and reliable!I can hook up 2 or 3 high speed USB 3 drives with this, plug it into my USB 3.1 port on Mac and get full speed from all the drives. No slow downs! Love this thing! I have multiple Startech products and have come to rely on them for high quality items. This one is no exception. 5Unreliable -- Can't RecommendConnected to the USB-C port on my NUC and providing a pass-through to at StarTech 2 x 2.5" enclosure; it proved absolutely unreliable. You never know if the drives in the enclosure will fire up. When the enclosure is connected directly to the NUC it boots up like a charm and stays running.Similar unreliable performance with a StarTech 2 x 3.5" enclosure, but not sure if it is also related to the loss of all data on the two 3.5" drives in that enclosure (which was tossed in the trash).Regardless...not worth the effort to return this hub. It is also heading for the trash. 1USB-C Hub - 4X USB-A Ports - 10GbpsPlugged into Motherboard ( X470/Ryzen 2700X ) USB-C port , all 4 USB-A ports test at 459.1 MB/s Read and 453.1 MB/s Write with a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB mounted in a Vantec NexStar USB 3.1 Gen 2 external enclosure ( NST-270A31-BK ). Thats ALMOST what the drive gets hooked up directly to a SATA III port, and in an actual transfer...I transferred a 45GB folder of 4K and 1080P movies that was on the drive...to the 1TB NVMe boot drive on the motherboard. It transferred at 405 MB/s for the entire transfer, no buffer shenanigans...just straight raw speed for the entire transfer. Awesome little hub here !!! 5Power hungry and non-functional on two different USB 3.1 cards, cord way shorter than claimedHad to return this as defective after extensive troubleshooting. For one thing, it was hogging so much power from the (perfectly able) CalDigit USB 3.1 card initially attached to it on a MacPro tower that it caused other devices on the card to force-eject. For another, it hardly was able to recognize any (low power, i.e. USB stick) devices attached to it. When it did, it crawled at sub-USB 1.0 speed. Finally, the manufacturer's note in the Q&A is completely inaccurate: the cord on the unit is no more than 6". Completely useless if it is being attached to the back of a tower just where will most people access the ports on a regular basis without reaching behind the tower, then? 1
