Customer Reviews

I REALLY liked the product and bought 3 of them With over 800 reviews on these, my little old review will probably just get lost in the shuffle. I am REALLY torn as to give these 2 stars or 3. I REALLY liked the product and bought 3 of them. I SO wanted to give these 5 stars. I also bought 2 of the bulb type units for the C and D cell MagLites which are still working just fine. (I hope I didn't just jinx myself by saying that - LOL) Anyway, these things are super bright and a cheaper alternative to buying an actual LED MagLite. And although they lasted a while, I'm still disappointed that the pins broke off of ALL of them. The first one I though was my fault. I figured maybe I was turning it on and off too roughly or maybe I dropped it or whatever. After all I DO carry it every day in a belt holster for work. Apparently this is a design flaw since I was very careful after the first one broke, only to have the others break in the same way. DANG! Really sad that these aren't more durable because I loved them so much. And I REALLY hate spending $25 on an actual LED model. Oh well.Buyer beware on these! Great product - but needs thicker / stronger / more durable pins. 2May not be for you, but it's precisely what I wanted. My only quibble is that it takes less of a rotation to turn the light on, meaning my... excess padding... will occasionally turn the light on when I get in the car, but that's not really TerraLUX's problem, that's more like the problem of a 40 year old man eating like a 17 year old boy.Other than that, it's a super-intuitive install. I'm a somewhat compulsive reader of directions, but it wasn't really necessary in this case, it doesn't get much more obvious from an assembly perspective.I don't care much about lux meter readings and all that, what I care about is function. For a small AA flashlight I wanted:1: An LED Maglite in the shorter "Classic" length. The new native LED Maglites are longer, I don't like that.2: More light and better focus than you get from the "Classic" light's incandescent bulb3: Battery life and bulb life. I carry my Maglite in a leather pouch on my belt because I'm using it constantly. Burned out bulbs and dead batteries are not helpful to me.4: Longer throw than the classic incandescent. Final score: 4/4I've been using it for several months now, so in terms of longevity vs price, I'm already satisfied. 5Very good upgrade, much brighter than the original. I used the TerraLUX TLE-5EX MiniStar2 LED to upgrade on old Mini-Mag that I bought back in the early 90's. The light had been sitting in a drawer for several years with a burned out bulb.Installing the new LED and reflector is pretty straightforward and really easy. Although I definitely wouldn't call the upgrade a tactical flashlight, the new LED it much brighter than the original incandescent bulb. I also noticed that the batteries last a lot longer too.The only negative feedback that I have (and it is very minor) is that when I turn the light to the spotlight setting, it seems like it gets a little loose in the front but not nearly enough that the light comes apart and it doesn't affect the functionality of the light. The flashlight doesn't feel quite as "solid" as it did before because of this. Again, it's not a big deal.I'm glad I purchased this product and brought my old mini-mag out of retirement. Overall, this upgrade is well worth the money. 4Buy a new Maglight with LED instead This does make the flashlight better all around, but it has one serious flaw. If you try to focus the beam, the focus lens spins right off the main barrel. This is due to the thickness of the new lens upgrade. It came off so easily while focusing I was a little shocked. I then started reading a little more and found a few people that talked about the problem. I believe you are better off buying a new Maglight rather than spending money on this upgrade. I don't like waste of any kind, and wanted to save the flashlight rather than toss it. I ended up giving it to my son after installing this LED. 3Breathed new life..."light" into an old flashlight. Wow... I upgraded my mini-mag several years back to the 3 build LED replacement version... better than the original but still suffered from relatively low light and not really used it. In turn, I decided to try an upgrade 'one last time'... I read the reviews on this upgrade and simply put... I am thoroughly impressed. I love the super bright, clear light. I did an informal test of the upgrade in a dark room and I would easily say the upgrade is twice as bright as the LEDs that I had in before!! I appreciate this doesn't tell you much without the specs of the LEDs but I can assure you I am super stoked on the performance. I use my mini-mag all of the time now while on duty (first responder) with complete confidence that I have a great tool in a small package. My love for my mini-mag has been restored!! I can't speak to the battery life compared to the LED as I haven't had it long enough yet, however; even if I use more batteries it is still worth it for the amount of light this puts out now. Easy trade in my mind. Highly encourage the upgrade. 5Tripping the light fantastic once again This is great! I have a sentimental attachment for my old Minilite: it wears its battlescars with pride, and there's something totally reliable and predictable about the way it just, well, works.. No fancy SOS flashes, strobes or blinking when you're trying to find the rubbish bin the dark or see where the mud starts and stops: just light where and when you want it. However, It was starting to look a little tired, alongside the floodlights and search-beams of the $4.99 LED throwaways...so I ordered this kit on a punt, hoping it lived up to its advertising...and presto! A few minutes unwrapping the bits, a few more following the instructions, a false start because I thought I knew better than the instructions and yes! I now throw a very respectable, utterly reliable light from an old friend.Very very pleased... 5This product is bright but consumes >4x current than a new Maglite LED The product is great if you just want a bright LED replacement for your old mag-lites. However, if you are doing it to also get the long life out of your barreries, it does not compare to a mag-lite manufactured LED. The current consumption of this Terra LUX product for mini Maglites is >4x the Maglite manufactures LED flashlight. I measured the Maglite LED product at 166mA and the Terralux product at 670mA. Both flashlights had Energizer Lithium Batteries. I was able to do this with my son s new mini mag that he got for Christmas vs my old retrofitted one. 2Excellent upgrade! Super BRIGHT! This is awesome! It is no exaggeration when it is said that your Mag Mini will be 7 to 10 times brighter!Using the same pair of AA Harbor Fright Thunderbolt Magnum Heavy Duty (zinc chloride) batteries, I took before and after pictures. The original incandescent bulb lit up a tired dull tungsten yellow - like a cheap toy. Installed LED and WOW! Like the white piercing light of the gods! This LED is BRIGHT! Super glad I got this! If it is this bright with tired Heavy Duty batteries, can you imagine how much brighter it would be with alkaline or lithium batteries? I haven t tested those yet! When installing the LED, if it does not light up - remove it, reverse the pins (turn the LED 180 ) and reinsert. It should then blind you with wonderful bright light! One important thing to note is if you want to preserve the twist ON / OFF feature of the Maglite Mini, take care not to remove the black Do Not Remove grommet / spacer where the original incandescent bulb sits. It is easy to confuse this with the LED s circular circuit board and you might think to remove the Do Not Remove grommet. You can savely reinsert it if you accidentally removed it (I did). Most people do not know that all incandescent Maglites contain a spare bulb under the battery spring inside the tail cap. Carefully remove the battery spring and if it s never been used, it will be there... although may never get used once you upgrade the LED. Just something I d mention. I didn t know myself until a while ago.Besides this, I also ordered and installed the Neutek glass lens, replacing the original Maglite plastic lens. So my after picture shows the TerraLUX TLE-5EX LED with reflector and the Neutek glass lens.Absolutely excellent! Highly recommended for your Maglite Mini! 5Solid Upgrade!! I've had this Maglite AA for about 25 years, and I tossed it into a junk box probably 15 years ago in favor of more powerful LED flashlights and headlamps. A few weeks ago, a friend brought out a newer maglite with an LED, which caused me to remember I still had this little guy somewhere. I dug it out, put batteries in it, and was disappointed in how dull the light was. Two minutes and one Amazon search later, I had this LED upgrade on order. It made a huge difference, which you can see in the picture I've uploaded. This little light will not be headed back into any junk box. Some reviews mentioned that the LED takes up more space and you have less thread to focus the beam. While the size difference is true, the beam can be focused tight and the flashlight still feels solid. I don't see any downsides to this upgrade. 5super easy to install I have to say... I really really really wanted to give this product 5 stars. And if it was *just* the product itself, it would get 5 stars. But the reason I can't is simple. The item description is, quite frankly, misleading. But before I get to that, let me actually review the item. It's a drop in, super easy to install, led replacement for your MiniMag flashlight. Now, this little sucker is *BRIGHT*. Bright enough that 30 minutes after installing it, I've still got a couple little purple splotches in front of my eyes. That's the good. And admittedly, it's pretty good. Time will tell how durable it is, and how much longer the batteries last compared to the incandescent bulb. But it is *WAY* brighter than the normal bulb. Now to the part where I say the item description is misleading. It claims to be 140 lumens. And I can tell you right now, it's not that high. Bright? Absolutely. 140 lumens? Nope. I've got a 160 lumen flashlight, and it's not anywhere near that brightness. And right there on the packaging (once you actually receive it) is their out. BIG BOLD "140 LUMENS" with a little asterisk next to it.... And if you look down at the bottom? "*LED Manufacturer's Rating". So, in perfect laboratory conditions, with perfect heatsinking, and a perfect LED driver providing exactly the right voltage and exactly the right current (probably just before the LED burns itself out) it might output 140 lumens. Just before it lets the magic smoke out.And finally, just be aware that this increases the length of the flashlight ever so slightly. I'd say about 3/16ths of an inch (the thickness of the mount for the led chip and associated circuitry). So if you have a holster that just fits the light lengthwise, that's something to be aware of. 4
