Customer Reviews

Whisper quiet I don't normally post reviews, but this drive impressed me enough to see me here! :)picked up one of these late January and am very happy with it. read/write performance is very acceptable and so far the drive is whisper quiet! no issues or complaints about anything from me.Picking up 3 more this week to load into my NAS.Cheers 5stay away from this drive... 09/20/2015Died last week (it was bought April 2015) - won't power on. Suspect it also burned out switching power adapter on the 4-bay unit it was in. Never in uptem years has this ever happen.09/22/2015Toshiba 5TB SATA 6Gb/s 7200rpm, 128MB Cache, 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive (PH3500U-1I72) sells for same price, and doesn't have this problem. Have at least 5 of these drives.09/25/2015Just RMAed and it had warranty to 09 2019.09/28/2015Just returned RMAed drive, it cost 14 to return via UPS. I'll report when and if I get a new drive - suppose to get in 30 days. Warranty according to Toshiba was 09/25/2019 comes to 4 years. 1Looks like a very good drive at a good price TOSHIBA MD04ACA400 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive sold by Oceanside Store and fulfilled by Amazon in mid-November 2014 for just over one hundred forty one bucks.I am a long time user of Hitachi (HGST) drives and I continue to buy them when I can find new ones with factory warranties at reasonable prices. However a recent search for a replacement for a relatively new Seagate ST4000DM000 produced this listing. The Seagate came originally as a BackupPlus in a case with a wall wart and USB3.0 interface. They came with a 2 year warranty, which is void when they are removed from the case. As bare drives Seagate rates these for 2400 power-on hours, which seems ridiculously short (2014 data sheet). So for about the same price I bought one of these Toshiba drives. The Toshiba web site lists several series of drives: MD04ACAxxx is not one of them. The MD03ACA400 is specified as a 7200 rpm drive with an MTBF of 1 million hours, designed for use in 24x7 surveillance systems, but this may or may not be an update to that drive. I do take this drive to be one of that general series. Because Toshiba doesn't list this drive I consider the specs to be unknown; the label gives neither the RPM nor the buffer size. The label gives the manufacturer as Toshiba Germany (Dusseldorf) although it states the drive is made in the Philippines. In short this was a bit of a gamble, and it still is.The purchased drive arrived well packaged by Amazon and the seller and in what appears to be a factory sealed ESD envelope. HDDScan's SMART report shows zero hours, 2 power on cycles, 5 load/unload cycles, and 1 power off retract. It also says the RPM is 7200 and the native and logical sector sizes are 4096 and 512, respectively. No buffer size is reported. The drive is uninitialized, which must be addressed before it can be formatted (Windows will do this for you). I take this to be a new, virgin drive. The label shows a manufacture date of October 8, 2014. Contrary to one of the question responses, the Toshiba US web site reports the warranty for my serial number to be valid until October 23, 2019, which would be essentially five years.A reviewer on another site said these were rebranded Hitachi drives. It is true that Toshiba bought some of WD's drive business and HGST was purchased some time ago by WD. Although there are some common features, including a high MTBF and a long warranty, it is clear to me that these are not Hitachi drives. In side by side comparison there are too many mechanical differences.I haven't actually used the drive yet, but so far it seems to be a good purchase - a very good drive at a good price. If I have a problem or find out more about the drive later I'll update this review. 5One Star I purchased 6 of these drives 4 months ago for my NAS setup and 2 have failed so far. 1DOA on arrival Ordered two. Both DOA on arrival. 1Very good with 7200 RPM! Item is OK with 7200RPM (Not 5400 RPM as advertised, but that's very good). Also it is inexplicable how the item spent 2 weeks by USPS Priority 2-day, when according with the label item it was mailed form 20 minutes away? Perhaps some authority over USPS intercept it and took time to check the brand new hard-drive to see if there are any information on it?Anyway, HD is very good & OK with 7200RPM! 5Great price for the amount of space, works great. Use it to store videos and music, has been working fine since I bought it. Runs fairly quick, is a bit noisy. Can't really beat the price for the space. 4Failed after just 6 weeks I've had this drive for about 6 weeks. A few weeks ago, it locked up during a write operation and it hung the entire system in the process. After a reboot the drive was corrupted and could not be recovered. I performed a long format on it and went about restoring the files to it. Another few days past, and during another sync operation, the drive became corrupt and unreadable. In the same way, it hung Windows Explorer and would not allow a reboot despite killing explorer. Once again, all data was lost. Another long format, another few days, and again the drive has failed. When it was working, the write performance was terrible - about 30-40MB/s. By comparison, my Hitachi and Seagate drives, on the same machine, push from 100-120 MB/s sustained with bursts up to 300MB/s. I bought this drive based on the good reviews as a backup, but my experience has been terrible with it. I'll see if I can get it replaced but I won't be buying any more. For reference, I have been building systems for 30 years, and run a half dozen drive arrays at home. I'm used to drives crapping out eventually, but this intermittent failure, which is obviously at a hardware level, is a pain, and something I don't lightly tolerate. I can't recommend this drive. 15 Year Warranty Bought from Global Silicon Electronics. Came with warranty till 2022 May according to the check from Toshiba warranty site. Haven't tested drive yet. Just checked for warranty through the Serial Number. Drive is manufactured in April 2017 5Drive Works Fine for Backups After about a month, the drive works fine--no issues. One slight kibble: although sold as a bare drive, I would have appreciated a reminder, and guidance that it's not P&P, it must be mounted for the computer to see it (Windows 7). Although I have had to do this several times in the past, each time has been a small learning experience which starts ominously: Windows Explorer does not see the new drive.I use the drive as a transportable backup to four drives on my computer to take all my files with me when on the road with my laptop. 5
